Maiz & Barro Mexican Grill - Cantina

Hidden Gem! I wish these guys were closer to the city and they would be raking in tons of customers. As it stands, I religiously visit anytime I am around that part of the town. Every food I have tried has been beyond spectacular. Great service. The bakery deserts are to die for.

The food is always incredible. I've tried most of the menu. The specials are also always worth a try. There has been only one item I would not reorder, it's wasn't bad, it was just too much bread, not enough meat, the torta. The atmosphere is fun, colorful, and engaging. The place is loud and welcomes an "outdoor" voice. The service is good, not great, not exceptional. Personally, I'm great with faces, I'm certainly there enough and feel like they've never seen me before. So I say the servers are just good, and good is good enough. I'm there for the food. The hostesses, on the other hand, are awesome.

First time here 4/5/25. This is our new spot! Loved every bite of the meals and desserts we had. Hubby had the grilled shrimp burrito with beans, rice, avocado, etc. And he ate the entire burrito. I know this may not sound appetizing but I had a burrito with beer battered cod. I felt as though I was being adventurous (never put that in a burrito before), which normally I am not lol. It was delicious! I couldn't eat it all due to its size but wow I would order it again and again! I have an aversion to cilantro and the server remembered I said that! They did not add cilantro in any dishes on my plate, I appreciate that. The pico was on the side and it was not cilantro heavy, but I could still taste it darn it. Their pico is so good according to my hubby. For dessert, we tried the cheesecake with pecans and caramel, absolutely delicious. I told my hubby he better get me a cheesecake each time we go! The apple tart ala mode was hitting all the right taste buds too. Burritos 18 bucks a piece, desserts 10 a piece, and can't forget the salsa that we loved so much we had to buy a 16oz size and bring it home, that was 10. Yes, the complimentary chips and salsa were great! Great meal, friendly service, the owners are the chef and the baker that made these tasty meals. Talented I tell you! Thanks again, we'll be back! Second time coming, had a large crowd for my son graduation. The food was amazing everyone loved these items. Our server was awesome and very accommodating and made sure we enjoyed our experience. My go to for Mexican food

We had my baby shower at Maiz and Barro and it was spectacular! Working with Elvia (owner) was very easy. The food, staff and atmosphere were great. Every single guest kept raving about how delicious everything was... you MUST try their desserts! The room comfortably fit 60 people. I highly recommend and will definitely be back!

After one of the pickiest foodies I know suggested Maiz & Barro so our family stopped in for an amazing meal and drinks and fresh made pastries. Everything here is made from scratch, and tastes amazing. The owner operators each have over 35 years experience in high end restaurants and decided to go in their own. Stop on in and be amazed. Update: we have been back with family and friends many times since the original review and it is our official favorite restaurant at this point. Great servers, amazing food and the owners are still hard at work making everyone’s experience a welcoming and enjoyable experience.

I'm a new regular any time I'm visiting from Indianapolis. I fell in love with this place after my first visit. The atmosphere is very traditional and festive. The service is friendly with and with a smile. I enjoyed meeting Elvia (spelling?) and enjoying a treat of one of her baked goods, the Mango Cheesecake. My favorite drink here is the Paloma as it is very refreshing. I recommend trying the Platanos Fritos. My friend and I split the Elotes and just kept nodding to each other in agreement as we knowingly read each other's minds knowing the other was thinking the same yummy goodness thoughts while licking our fingers and wiping our faces. Yummy!

Wow what a pleasant surprise in oak fores Illinois with professional chefs in the kitchen food was out of this world we had the molcajete it comes with different types of meat and everything was tender flavorful the drinks were amazing that cilantro cucumber and jalapeno virgin margarita best drink I ever had just perfect for summer the Jamaica perfectly balanced not over sweet we will definitely be back can’t wait to try desserts
